In this course we will discover how Botticelli and Leonardo disguised symbolic meanings within their masterpieces, meanings which can be uncovered through a knowledge of the neoplatonic philosophy and cosmology which informs them. In the 1480s Botticelli was inspired by Ficino and his circle to produce talismanic images of Sophia or divine feminine wisdom through painting mythological subjects (Luna, Minerva, Venus), with the aim of uniting reason and imagination in the alchemical journey of the soul towards fuller self- realisation. Leonardo subtlely infuses his famous ‘Last Supper’ with the symbolism of the twelve zodiac signs, thereby uniting the microscosm of this particular event involving Christ and his disciples with the universal order of the cosmos and the archetypal qualities of all humankind. We will consider the views of both art historians and esoteric writers on the question of the validity of these symbolic interpretations, and ponder on the relevance of such symbolism for viewers today.
