This four week course is an introduction to the concept of the ‘music of the spheres’, first associated with Pythagoras, who is said to have discovered the perfect mathematical ratios underlying nature and the cosmos, expressed through musical sound. Musiciansendeavoured to imitate this heavenly music through their compositions, in order to bring the human soul into alignment with the perfect harmonies of the divine realm. We will start with some basic music theory in order to understand Pythagorean principles, andthen look at the ways in which theorists and composers used these ideas in the ancient world and in the Renaissance. The 15th and 16th centuries saw a revival of art and music inspired by Pythagorean and Platonic ideas, which aimed to cultivate the symbolic andmagical properties of sound in order to achieve transformatory and healing affects, and we will end by looking at how Marsilio Ficino’s ‘natural magic’ combined astrology and music to foster harmony of mind and body.
